  FARGO, N.D. (BP) -- The blizzard that halted traffic north, south and west of the Red River Valley that borders Minnesota held off until the close of the Friday, Oct. 11, final session of the Dakota Baptist Convention.

  RAPID CITY, S.D. (BP) -- Garvon Golden, executive director/treasurer of the Dakota Baptist Convention since 2012, has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31.

  "After serving in denominational life for the last 20 years I am excited about retiring into pastoring again," Golden, 66, told Baptist Press. "I hope to finish my life ministry in the local church as a pastor and preacher of the Gospel." Read More

  ABERDEEN, S.D. (BP) -- Snowy landscapes and distances lead to isolation for many ministry leaders in the Dakota Baptist Convention. Encompassing 147,878 square miles, it is considered a small convention with only about 90 Southern Baptist churches in the two-state region.

  In its ministry leaders' retreat, the convention sought to "draw pastors and church leaders together to break the isolation they have on the field," DBC Executive Director Garvon Golden said, so they can "enjoy intimate fellowship with one another." Read More

  RAPID CITY, S.D. (BP) -- The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August will be the final time the Dakota Baptist Convention will host its annual evangelism thrust that began at the iconic biker gathering in 2006.

  But the outreach will continue.

  SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (BP) -- With "Together We Can Because He Can" as its annual meeting theme, and a Cooperative Program dinner to start things off, messengers to the Dakota Baptist Convention (DBC) voted again to increase Cooperative Program giving next year by 2 percent.

  This was in addition to the $25,000 it sent in extra funds to Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministries earlier this year, for the second year in a row, because of increased giving by DBC churches. Read More

  NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- The Dakota Badlands, a barren stretch of land once described as "a place with a long list of secrets," doesn't typically receive top billing as a vacation destination.

  But for Chuck Kelley, president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and his wife Rhonda, a trek across North and South Dakota is one they wished they had taken sooner.

  Taking their cue from the NOBTS centennial challenge to go on a mission trip this year, the Kelleys decided on a mission trip/vacation this summer, encouraging church planters with a listening ear alongside Chuck Kelley's goal to visit all 50 U.S. states. The trip allowed him to visit states 49 and 50.

  Dubbing it the "Great Dakota Adventure," the Kelleys set out to find and encourage church planters and their wives serving in out-of-the-way places. Over a meal at each stop, the Kelleys heard stories of blessing and God's faithfulness and of trial and difficulty as church planters told of what God is doing in the Dakotas. Read More

  PIERRE, S.D. (BP) -- A healthy increase in financial support, new pastors and denominational recognition highlighted the 2017 annual meeting of the Dakota Baptist Convention.

  Known in the two-state convention as its "Baptist Gathering," the Dakota annual meeting took place Sept. 21-22 at the Ramkota Pierre Hotel in Pierre, S.D. Its theme -- "Building up the body of Christ together: revitalizing our churches" -- was drawn from Ephesians 4:11-13.

  "I thought it was very uplifting, very good," said Debby Bogart, wife of Capitol Heights Baptist Church's pastor Bob Bogart in Pierre. "One of the things that was really good for me was hearing all the different messages. As a pastor's wife you're busy in the church so it was good to sit back and be fed. We heard a lot of useful messages to take back to our churches." Read More
